Our numbers for the Meeting were down this year due to various factors and of the 36 players entered for the above Meeting, three were forced to pull out at the last moment due to injury.

Following the recent deluge, we were all heartily thankful to have a dry and even partly sunny day. The ladies were most complimentary about the good state of the course which is a credit to head green keeper Tony Dyke and his team.

Lady Captain Sue Squire, had assembled a friendly and efficient team to meet and greet and ensure that our ladies knew where to find everything. Phina Barrows Deichmann acted as a most capable starter. Handicap Secretary, Margaret Edwards inputted the scores and worked with Olive Hammon, Handicap Secretary at Haste Hill, who so ably assisted me all day.

The morning competition was 18 holes individual stableford and after lunch, a 9-hole team competition. The results were:

I was very grateful to County Captain Jenny Pizey, who played during the afternoon to make up a team. I was also very appreciative of the tremendous support from Jenny, both before and during the event.

It was a pleasure to work with the staff at Wyke Green including Manager Andy Heath and House Manager Pauline Freeman. I would like to thank Wyke Green for hosting this event.

Friday 27th April
On 27th April the Spring Meeting – Div I took place at Northwood GC. The course was in excellent condition and looked fabulous for the first 2 hours of sunshine we saw before it disappeared behind the clouds and rain.

However the service provided at Northwood was incredible. The team run by Stephen Proudfoot were friendly, efficient and professional. Stephen was on hand for the entire weekend and joined us to watch the Championship final. NGC provided us with an amazing 20 different ball spotters / collectors as well as a charming Starter called Alistair. The Office, the Lady Captain and their members could not have done more. It was a truly fitting venue for this event supported by an excellent team.
The catering team were very accommodating considering the vast number of changes in the few days prior to and those throughout the event. They accepted late changes for dinner without complaint for the Friday evening meal. The meal was very enjoyable and the desserts were divine!

County President Margaret Northcott was on hand to advise the best way to handle any decisions needed. County Captain Jenny Pizey & Fixtures Secretary Maureen Campbell were a dynamic duo on the Reception desk greeting all the players and advising them of all the information they required as well as collating and checking the scores.    They were very enthusiastic and happy to help which made for a relaxed & welcoming atmosphere.

The Manager allowed us to use their new flat screen TV to display the Spring Meeting results and also the draws for the weekend’s Championship & Plate which was much admired by the players and helpful to the Organisers.

During the match play we had several referees and officials in attendance which was organised by Jenny Pizey. Robbie Martin was delighted to have the opportunity for his referees to take part and gain experience. They should be commended for their commitment to referee despite the atrocious conditions we experienced in part over the weekend. The golf ran incident free leaving most of them to enjoy the golf being observed.

There were some outstanding scores by Jackie Thompson and Carol Masters in challenging conditions. Tara Watters displayed admirable golf and won the Kennilworth Cup on Friday with a final gross score of 146 after storming her way to an unbelievable 71 on a wet and windy afternoon. Her score was rewarded with a move back to a +2 handicap.

Sat 28th – Sun 29th April

Following the 1st round of the match play several players were not available to play in the Championship Plate. This resulted in Priya Pankhania advancing straight to the final whilst Tsuruko Kawabata fought the semi-final out with Anne Koychev who won the match 4 & 2. However, young 13 year old Priya showed true stamina winning the Final against Anne on the 18th!

Tara Watters sailed through to the final match play where she met Nicola Grover. However, Nicola had faced a challenging semi-final with Jane Rees (2nd favourite) who was taken up the 19th by a determined Nicola and the battle paid off!

The weather had been forecast to be even worse than the rain which started during the final but the gale-force winds apparently blew it to the side and despite it being cold, windy and wet lots of supporters came out. The rain stopped and the sun emerged on the back nine to see Tara Watters take the title for a fifth time and for a 2nd year running with an outstanding approach shot to the 16th to leave her a birdie putt. It was not needed and Nicola and Tara shook hands on a 3 & 2 result.

County President Margaret Northcott delivered a touching speech thanking NGC as excellent hosts and congratulating the players whilst County Captain Jenny Pizey handed out the medals and trophies to the deserving winners.

The event was a great success and very enjoyable – thank you to all of those who contributed and supported the Championship.

Bronze Spring Meeting

The Bronze Spring Meeting had 49 entries this year, and these ladies found Grim’s Dyke in very good form!  The greens were extremely slick and all players found them tricky.  Play started at 9.00 and all ladies arrived safely and on time for their tee times.

Thank you to Lady Captain Gerry Archer and Sylvia Thornton for acting as starters for the day.  Lady Captain also acted as course steward to ensure the groups kept up with the group in front.

The weather forecast had said Monday would be the best day of the week and thankfully it was.     It was a frosty start but the sun soon came out and the wind stayed off.

Grim’s Dyke ladies as well as the staff were extremely helpful.  They provided lovely flower table arrangements as well as the prize table.  They organised a half-way house with hot and cold drinks as well as an array of biscuits.  They also provided prizes for the overall front 9 and overall back 9 prizes.  Thank you to all the ladies for their support at this event particularly Lady Captain and her competition secretary Gay Hawkes, as well as Gill Sriskandan who supported me for the whole event

As agreed by the Executive at a previous meeting prizes were provided for Division 1 (21-28) and Division 2 (29-36)  as the number of entries for the divisions were not equal it was agreed to do a 1^st,2^nd and 3^rd prizes for division 1 and 1^st and 2^nd for division 2.

Although we had three down pours during the afternoon it did not dampen the spirits of our team determined to repeat the success of the previous year.

The team consisted of regular team players and three new players making their debut for the Junior County Squad.

We were 4 matches to 3 down and all was hanging on the last game which ended in a victory for Middlesex at the 17^th hole by one of our new girls to the quad – Alyssa Htaike making an overall tie as a result.

Tara and Mandy played in the London Foursomes (scratch) at The Berkshire: Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th March.  It was a very challenging event as The Berkshire has two wonderful and demanding courses.  They met very strong opponents all the way but managed to make it through 36 holes each day concluding on Sunday where they were thrilled to reach the semi-finals.   Sadly they lost on the 18th to Worplesdon who in turn lost in the final to two 15year olds from Wentworth!
