Finchley Golf Club ladies are celebrating after being crowned Middlesex champions of the Pearson Trophy for the first time since 1995.

Having finished top of their qualifying group, they won two nail-biting matches on finals day at Pinner Hill, beating both Enfield and Sudbury 4-3, and will now go forward to repreent Middlesex against Hertfordshire, Kent and Surrey at Hartesbourne on Monday 18th July.

The seven-a-side competition is restricted to players with a handicap of between 13 and 32 and last week’s semi-final against Enfield was locked at 3-3 before Nicki Easterman holed the decisive putt on the 18th green.

Her place in the final was taken by Angela Rosenberg and she gained the vital win on the last hole when the match against Sudbury, who had previously knocked out defending champions Muswell Hill, was also level at 3-3.

The successful Finchley finals day team was Tish Hannington, Sue Strang, Mo Cansick, Angela Mangion, Brenda Morris, Angela Rosenberg, Nicki Easterman, Val Grandis and Suchita Patel, along with non-playing captain Brenda Tobias.

Ladies’ Captain, Anne Iarchy, said “It couldn’t have been more tense, with both the morning and afternoon games decided by the last putt on the 18th hole.  It will be a great honour for Finchley to represent Middlesex in the inter-county semi-finals and final, and we’ll do our best to go the whole way”

Muswell Hill were sadly, but only very closely, beaten by Sandy Lodge (Herts) in the semi-finals and Wildwood (Surrey) beat Westerham (Kent).

Wildwood were victorious over Sandy Lodge in the final.
